BMW X5: Replacing Lumbar Cushion On Front Left Or Right Seat

Special tools required:

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Detach backrest cover (1) at bottom from backrest frame.

Remove valve housing.

Disconnect air hoses (2) from valve housing.

NOTE: Heat air hoses gently if they are firmly seated on valve housing.

Housing of valve block must not be unclipped (leakage). If necessary, release mounting and clip housing together.

If necessary, cut all retainers on lumbar cushion (3) and spring wire.

NOTE: Remove all remnants of retainers. Lock new retainers by bending with special tool 52 0 050.

Detach lumbar cushion (3) from spring wire.

Remove lumbar cushion (3) downwards between backrest frame and seat mechanism.

Installation:

Make sure air hoses are correctly connected to valve block (colour coding).

Air hoses must be laid without kinks.

Check lumbar cushion for damage.

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING VALVE HOUSING FOR LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT LUMBAR SUPPORT (NORMAL/ELECTRIC)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Release retaining screw (1).

Disconnect electrical plug connection.

Disconnect air hoses (1) and (2).

Installation:

Make sure air hoses (2) are correctly connected to valve block (colour coding: red/blue).

Housing on valve block must not be unclipped (leakage). If necessary, clip housing together.

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REAR PANEL ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT BACKREST

Operation is shown on the left seat. When removing from the right seat, transpose the pull and striking sides accordingly.

  1. Grip between rear panel and backrest cover on door side until clip can be felt (do not pull).
  2. At same time, firmly punch towards middle of seat on inner side (tunnel side) at top.

    Upper retainers spring out of seat guide.

  3. Pull rear panel up out of lower guides.

Installation:

Rear panel and clips must not be damaged.

  2. Lower clips

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING HEAD RESTRAINT MOUNT ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT

Operation is identical to:

Replacing drive for head restraint adjustment on left or right front seat.

REMOVING AND INSTALLING OR REPLACING FRONT LEFT OR RIGHT HEAD RESTRAINT

Move headrest up as far as possible.

Pull out forcefully.

Installation:

Press in head restraint until it can be heard to snap into place.
